Britons appalled as criminals not deported: Indian-origin MP
September 8th, 2011 - 3:18 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Sep 8 (IANS) The British public were “appalled” to see dangerous criminals, including rapists, hiding behind human rights plea and escaping deportation from Britain, Indian-origin MP Priti Patel has said.
Figures revealed by Patel say that at least 88 killers, rapists and violent criminals of foreign nationality got to stay in Britain in 2010 after they used the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) to lodge appeals, The Sun reported.
Two were murderers, seven were rapists, 13 were sex offenders and 66 were convicted of other violent crimes.
“The government urgently needs to free Britain from Europe’s human rights laws so that dangerous foreigners can be removed,” Patel said.
The ECHR allows appeals against deportation on many conditions, including the “right to family life” used by foreigners with relatives in the country.
Appeals can also be lodged on the grounds that being deported could lead to them being tortured or killed in their own country.
