British school gets award set up by Napoleon
January 1st, 2012 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Jan 1 (IANS) A school in London where pupils learn all subjects in both French and English has won a prestigious award founded by French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
The Ecole de Wix, part of the Wix Primary School in Battersea, south London, received the Ordre des Palmes Academiques after teaching French and English for the past six years, the Daily Express reported Sunday.
The school, the first such joint language institution in the country, teamed up with Lycee Charles de Gaulle in South Kensington to help pupils become fluent in French at an early age.
Marc Wolstencroft, head of Wix Primary School, and Paul-Marie Blanchard, director at Ecole de Wix, were given the award by the French embassy in London.
The Ordre des Palmes Academiques was founded by Napoleon, who used it to honour eminent academicians.
Both schools follow a special curriculum that meets the requirements of both the British and French national curricula. In the first few weeks, pupils learn reading and writing in English, with French introduced as soon as they have a grasp of their mother tongue.
