British Muslims arrested in France burqa ban protest
April 11th, 2011 - 6:36 pm ICT by ANILondon, Apr.11 (ANI): British Muslim radicals were among at least 61 people arrested in Paris for illegally protesting against the French Government’s ban on the burqa.
Anjem Chaudary, a British Muslim radical and head of the outlawed Islam4UK which advocates Sharia law, was arrested and permanently banned from France when he tried to join the protest.
Choudary was served with a legal notice informing him that the French interior ministry was banning him permanently.
Abu Izzadeen and Omar Bakri, both also controversial figures based in Britain, were also detained by the police. Fouad Belkacem of the Sharia4Belgium group, was also arrested in Paris on Sunday, The Daily Mail reports.
Choudary has frequently praised the terrorists who organised the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. and the 7/7 bombings in London.and has appeared in court in Britain for organising marches.
He formed the group Al-Muhajiroun with Bakri, who was named the ‘Tottenham Ayatollah’ because of his praise of extremism.
Around 61 people, including 19 women wearing veils and an illegal immigrant who was carrying an offensive weapon, were arrested for taking part in the rally.
France has stepped up its security following threats from Al- Quaeda warning that it would attack the country following the introduction of the ban, which imposes fines of 130 pounds and ‘civic duty’ guidance to women caught wearing Islamic veils.
France is the second country in Europe, after Belgium, to introduce a full ban on a garment which immigration minister Eric Besson called a ‘walking coffin’.
The rigorous new law, which was passed last October, makes it an offence to wear face coverings in ‘public places’. Exceptions include crash helmets and ski masks.
Choudary insists that he has not broken any law in France and attacked the ban as an ‘outrage’.
“The actions of the French authorities today will only entrench Muslims more in their belief that sovereignty must belong to God alone and any challenge against this will be resisted and rejected,” he said. (ANI)
