British Couple Sentenced By Dubai Court For Kissing In Public

Dubai, Apr 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) 24-years-old Ayman Najafi and 25 year-old Charlotte Adams, a British couple on Sunday was sentenced to one-month prison term along with a fine of 1,000 dirhams which is about $270 for each and a deportation after the prison term is completed in Dubai. The couple was convicted by the Dubai appeals court for inappropriate behavior and illegal drinking. The couple who attended the Sunday hearing did not speak to the media. They have now thirty days to appeal in a higher court challenging Sunday’s ruling.
The couple was arrested by the police in November, 2009 when a woman complained that she had found the couple kissing passionately on the mouth at a restaurant. The law of the country forbids any kind of such public display of affection. The lady had reportedly said to the police that she found the couple in the compromising position while she was dining in the restaurant with her daughter.
The lawyer of the couple, Khalaf al-Hosany, has however maintained that the couple had not kissed on the mouth but on the cheek as a mark of greeting. The two, according to reports, were not in any relationship and only knew each other before they met for the first time in Dubai. The lawyer had asserted in the court that the accused persons never intended to break the law as was alleged by the lady. Khalaf al-Hosany had also in a previous hearing reportedly mentioned to the court that the lady had not seen the couple kissing but was informed of the act by her daughter.
