London, Aug.2 (ANI): A former British Army corporal has claimed that he saw Nazi general Heinrich Himmler die from cyanide poisoning in a prison in Nuremberg in 1945.

Harry Oughton Jones, who died at the age of 92 in April this year, has revealed this information in his diaries.

Himmler, disguised in a sergeant’s uniform and eye-patch after fleeing Berlin, was among German soldiers captured by the Allies following the Nazi surrender. It is widely thought his final words were: “I am Heinrich Himmler.”

But Corporal Harry said Himmler lambasted a captain sent to question his identity moments before he died.

Harry wrote that Himmler sneered: “You, my boy, are just a young captain and to take me I want to see your colonel in charge.”

According to The Sun, Corporal Harry, then 27, later said: “As we made to get him he just put his hand to his mouth and before we got to him he dropped dead on one of the beds and kicked two or three times and lay still.”Comrades who despised him for running the Gestapo blew Himmler’s cover.

They told their British captors at Luneburg Barracks he was SS Chief Field Marshal Himmler, the fiend behind Nazi concentration camps.

Durham Light Infantryman Harry revealed he helped bury Himmler. He had to sign the Official Secrets Act, because the Ministry of Defence wanted to keep it quiet for 100 years.

Harry’s grandson Jason Renshaw, 34, of Newcastle, plans to turn the diaries into a book. (ANI)
