Britain’s spookiest spots and incidents revealed
September 28th, 2009 - 6:06 pm ICT by ANILondon, Sep 28 (ANI): A phantom hitch-hiker getting into cars, a slip road going back to the 1940s, and the ghost of a one-legged priest-these are all among the spookiest spots and incidents revealed in a survey of supernatural sightings over the last 25 years.
The study by paranormal researcher Lionel Fanthorpe has revealed that some parts of the country are much more prone to strange goings-on than others.
The most widely reported supernatural phenomena was close encounters with UFOs-with 109 cases alien spaceships are more likely to be seen in Yorkshire than anywhere else.
One of the most well-known sightings took place in Scotland in 1986, when two police officers saw an orangey-red object travelling slowly through the sky and appearing to fall to the ground.
The research found that ghosts and poltergeists are most inclined to make an appearance in Kent, while Dorset has the highest number of railway ghosts.
In Shropshire, a young woman who leapt to her death from a tower after killing her lover is said to haunt visitors to Ludlow Castle.
It is also believed that a lovestruck barmaid stalks the corridors of the George and Dragon Hotel in West Wycombe, where she lived and worked in the 1700s.
There have also been five official reports of crop circles, with Wiltshire the most likely place to stumble across one.
Out of 21 reported sightings of werewolfs, the Cannock Chase werewolf in Staffordshire was the most spotted.
Fanthorpe, 74, from Cardiff, carried out a comprehensive investigation into all the sightings following the techniques of famous paranormal researcher Charles Fort.
“The highest form of investigation was never to regard something as so firmly proved that we don’t need to look at it again,” Sky News quoted him as saying.
“Neither should we laugh out of court anything that seems so ridiculous that it isn’t worth investigating,” he added. (ANI)
