London, Nov 27 (IANS) A number of schools specialising in maths would be set up in Britain as the government sees the subject as a “fundamental strategic priority” in education.

This is part of the government’s 600-million-pound drive to improve education, Sky News reported.

Chancellor George Osborne will announce the plan soon, where many new institutions for students between 16 and 18 and aimed at providing the “highest quality maths teaching in the world” will be set up.

The fund will be provided over the next three years, and pupils hoping to study at the new establishments will have to go through a special process devised by the department of education.

With the growth in digital technology, maths is regarded to be of increasing importance to the economy and to offer students better job prospects.
