Brit university doc slept with ‘vulnerable’ patients, making one pregnant
September 29th, 2010 - 6:43 pm ICT by ANILondon, Sept 29 (ANI): A British university doctor has been suspended from medical practice after he slept with two “vulnerable” patients and got one of them pregnant.
Student medical officer Dr Stephen Carr-Bains, 56, then arranged for an abortion for his lover, but did not make a note of the termination on her medical records.
The GP had sex with his other woman while “staying over” at her university accommodation.
Both women were suffering from mental health problems and the General Medical Council said his “deplorable” conduct showed a “flagrant disregard” for the doctor-patient relationship.
Carr-Bains, of Guildford, Surrey, was suspended from practising for one year following a two-week General Medical Council hearing in Manchester.
The hearing was told by GMC representative Cieran Rankin that Carr-Bains, who became Student Medical Officer at the University of Surrey in 1999 before resigning from his post at the Guildowns Group Practice in 2006, “abused his position of trust to exploit vulnerable patients”.
Rankin added that while the case did involve issues of a sexual nature, the GMC did not consider the allegations to be “sexual misconduct”.
“Rather it is a case of you overstepping boundaries where you have demonstrated poor judgment,” the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.
The GMC hearing was told that both patients were vulnerable and suffered from mental health problems.
The GMC report concluded by describing Carr-Bains’s conduct as “wholly unacceptable” and revealed he was close to being struck off the medical register.
The GMC panel also stated that Carr-Bains’ case would be reviewed shortly before the period of suspension expired. (ANI)
