Brit right wing protests breeding Muslim extremism in UK: Brit counter terror unit
November 20th, 2010 - 4:27 pm ICT by ANILondon, Nov 20(ANI): The English Defence League (EDL), a right-wing group formed in 2009, is encouraging Muslim extremists in the United Kingdom with its violent protests, police have claimed.
The EDL uses street-based marches against ‘Muslim extremism’, which the organization believes is typified by the spread of Islamism, Sharia law and Islamic extremism in England.
According to West Midlands Counter Terrorism unit, the EDL’s marches and protests encourage retaliation and drive young Muslims to extremism.
“In some areas, we have evidence that once the EDL have gone there’s fertile ground for those groups to say: ‘This is the way white Western society sees us,’” the Daily Star quoted Det Sup John Larkin, as saying.
Larkin’s views were supported by Nick Lowles, chairman of the Hope Not Hate campaign.
“The EDL breeds Islamic extremism and Islamic extremism breeds the EDL,” Lowles said.
However, EDL boss Tom Robinson said that the claims were “ridiculous”.
“Was 9/11 our fault? There have been 17,000 terrorist attacks since September 11 - I guess they’re our fault as well?” Robinson said. (ANI)
