Brit Muslims should think long-term future lies in UK: Minister
April 1st, 2011 - 6:37 pm ICT by ANILondon, Apr 1(ANI): It is not enough for Muslims to “rub along” without breaking the law, they must be persuaded that their long-term future lies in Britain, Minister of State for Security and Counter Terrorism, Pauline Neville-Jones, has said.
Neville-Jones also stressed that the government needs to convince the majority of the country’s population that the UK is a single nation.
“I think it’s a common experience now that we know less about each other than we used to and I think there’s a very strong feeling that we need to understand each other and we need to be working together as a nation,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Neville-Jones, as saying.
“We are trying to convince minorities in this country that they actually do have a long term future here and that it’s their country as much as anybody else’s,” she added.
The Minister of State for Security also highlighted that there needed to be greater trust between the local authorities and the police in dealing with vulnerable individuals.
“That process of cooperation and working with each other is part of a consensus of establishing what we all stand for,” Neville-Jones said. (ANI)
