Brit kite-surfer clears Brighton Pier in death-defying feat
November 15th, 2010 - 2:59 pm ICT by ANILondon, Nov 15 (ANI): One of the UK’s leading kite surfers has become the world’s first person to clear Brighton Pier in an amazing, death-defying leap.
Two-time British kite surfing champion Lewis Crathern had been waiting months for the perfect weather conditions before attempting the breath taking stunt, reports the Daily Mail.
The 25-year-old, who was British Kite Surfing Champion in 2006 and 2007, said that he bided his time for the right winds and waves before taking the leap over the pier, which was opened in 1899 and is more than 524 metres long.
A kite surfer for more than 17 years, Crathern spent two hours in the sea, enduring gale-force winds, before lifting off at 4 pm.
Watched by scores of worried onlookers, he soared over the pier building and landed with ease on the other side.
“I felt safe. I would never attempt these things if I wasn’t 100 percent safe,” he said after the breath-taking effort.
Crathern, who hails from Goring on the south coast, has previously jumped over Worthing Pier.
“Brighton was a bit more difficult than Worthing because the pier is a lot higher. But I got a huge wave and went for it,” he said. (ANI)
