Brit Indian-origin woman gets life sentence for murdering lover with poisoned curry
February 12th, 2010 - 2:11 pm ICT by ANILondon, Feb. 12 (ANI): A 45-year-old India-origin woman, who killed her 39-year-old lover by poisoning his curry, has been handed a life sentence.
Lakhvir Singh was told she must serve a minimum of 23 years for killing her victim Lakhvinder “Lucky” Cheema.
The evil mother of three showed no emotion as the verdicts were returned, The Sun reports.
Singh laced a curry in Lakhvinder’s home with the lethal Indian herb wolfsbane - known by the ancient Greeks as the “queen of poisons”.
Singh was said to have killed Cheema because she could not bear the thought of his marriage to 21-year-old Gurjeet Choongh on Valentine’s Day.
Cheema and Choongh became violently ill after eating leftover curry, and within hours, Cheema was dead and Choongh was fighting for her life.
Cheema’s illegal immigrant fiancee Gurjeet told the court: “Lucky had more (curry) than I did. He had it with three chapatis and I had it with two - and then he had a second helping. We sat at the dining table for ten minutes and chatted. We talked about our wedding.”
“I washed up the dishes and Lucky said: ‘I’m not feeling very well.’ He went for a shower. He said: ‘My face is becoming numb and when I touch it I cannot feel anything.’ I started feeling the same,” she added.
The couple managed to ring 999. Cheema told the operator: “Someone put poison in our food - she is my ex-girlfriend.”
He then called his sister - who jumped into a car with nephews and dashed to the flat, beating the ambulance. CCTV captured them carrying the poisoned couple to the motor before rushing them to hospital.
Doctors battled to save Cheema but his heart stopped. Gurjeet - whom Singh was cleared of attempting to murder - was in a coma for two days. (ANI)
