Brit boy, 2, is world’s first to be born with an extra strand of DNA
April 12th, 2011 - 1:38 pm ICT by ANILondon, Apr 12 (ANI): A British boy, aged two, has become the first and only person in the world to be diagnosed with an extra strand of DNA.
Alfie Clamp was born blind and with severe disabilities, and the first time his parents Gemma and Richard Clamp took him home, they found that there was something wrong with him.
They had to rush Alfie, from Nuneaton, Warks., back to the hospital after he stopped breathing and his lips turned blue.
Then when he was six weeks old, doctors carried out various tests and found his seventh chromosome had an “extra arm”.
The condition has never been documented anywhere in the world before, leaving doctors baffled, and it is so rare that it does not even have a name.
Alfie was unable to see until he was three months old and his muscles were so weak he could not roll over on his own.
“When the doctors told us I was absolutely devastated. As a pregnant mum you spend nine months thinking about what it will be like when your baby takes their first step or claps their hands,” the Daily Mail quoted Gemma as saying.
“Having a boy like Alfie makes you appreciate the little things. He didn’t roll over until he was 18 months old, but we were so excited when he did,” she said.
Alfie still suffers serious digestive problems and needs a cocktail of drugs every day to help his body absorb vital nutrients, though now he can see and will have an operation this month to fix an intestinal problem.
His parents, who also have 10-year-old daughter Georgia who is perfectly healthy, had their DNA tested but were not carriers of the faulty gene. (ANI)
