Bristol, the 18-year old daughter of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and unwed mother, has broken up with her fiance and the father of her 2 month old son Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston.

Levi Johnston, 19, said that he and Bristol had mutually decided to split “a while ago” and Bristol had said she is “devastated” by the break-up. The two were considering a summer wedding after Bristol finished high school. Levi did not elaborate more than saying that the rumors swirling about the reason for the break-up are inaccurate, and refused to say more as he met the press outside his family home in Wasilla, 40 miles north of Anchorage.

Bristol’s mother, Sarah Palin had announced her daughter’s pregnancy only days after she was named John McCain’s mate on the Republican Presidential ticket. Bristol had said in an interview that she did not regret being an unwed mother and the fact that Levi was a “hands-on” father made it easy for Tripp. However, Levi’s siter, Mercede said Bristol “makes it nearly impossible” to visit Tripp. Bristol Palin will continue to go to Wasilla High School and may attend college this fall. Johnston could not finish an apprenticeship at ASRC Energy Services after it was reported in the local media that he did not have the requisite high school diploma. Sarah Palin had said just after Tripp’s birth, “The road ahead for this young couple will not be easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Bristol and Levi are committed to accomplish what millions of other young parents have accomplished, to provide a loving and secure environment for their child.”
