Brasilia, April 26 (IANS/EFE) Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff launched a nationwide campaign to vaccinate over 30 million people against influenza by herself getting a vaccination shot.

Rousseff, who said she wanted to set an example, received her shot Monday.

“We want to protect everybody and that’s why we have distributed 33 million doses of the vaccine,” Rousseff said during her weekly radio show.

“I am 63, so I am getting vaccinated today,” Rousseff said.

The president was vaccinated later at a health station set up at the presidential palace.

The campaign is aimed at those over the age of 60, children less than 24 months-old and pregnant women, all of whom are considered at the highest risk of being affected with flu.

The government is spending 230 million reais (about $143.7 million) on the campaign.
