Brasilia, April 25 (Xinhua) The naval forces of Brazil, Argentina and the US have launched a joint military exercise near the Brazilian coast of Rio de Janeiro state, officials said. The joint exercise is codenamed “Operation Unitas”. Around 9,000 soldiers and 15 battle ships, including US aircraft carrier George Washington, are taking part in the exercise April 24 to May 2.
According to the Brazilian navy, the purpose of the drill is to share maritime and aerospace defence techniques between the navies of the three countries.
The naval exercises have been conducted annually for 49 years. Last year, it was held in Argentina.
