Bogus Indian origin female dentist jailed for three years in UK
March 29th, 2011 - 2:57 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Mar. 29 (ANI): An Indian origin dentist who is said to have earned almost 230,000 pounds by using a fake degree certificate to land work at a string of National Health Service (NHS) hospitals, has been jailed for three years.
Vinisha Sharma, whose deception was uncovered amid claims she had removed the wrong teeth from a patient, pleaded guilty last September to seven counts of forgery and fraud.
A Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that the 37-year-old, who had failed a three-year dentistry course, obtained work as a senior house officer by falsely claiming to have a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from an Indian university.
Judge Amjad Nawaz described the offences, committed over a timespan of almost nine years, as ‘pre-determined and deliberate’ breaches of the public’s trust.
Sharma showed little emotion as the judge told her the only possible sentence was one of imprisonment.
Sharma, who pleaded guilty shortly before she was due to stand trial, has failed in efforts to vacate her guilty pleas and still maintains that she did obtain a degree from an institution in Amritsar. (ANI)
