‘Best Job in The World’ winner has small mishap on first day
July 2nd, 2009 - 5:09 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Jul 2 (ANI): ‘Best Job in The World’ winner Ben Southall and his girlfriend Breanna Watkins had a bit of a mishap on the first day on the job.
Southall’s first task as “caretaker” of the islands of the Great Barrier Reef was a visit with a large media pack to the jewel of the Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach.
The 34-year-old charity fundraiser from Hampshire in the UK and his 22-year-old girlfriend frolicked in the water, drew pictures in the sand, and strolled along the beach doing interviews with national and international film crews.
The mishap occurred when Watkins, a former professional Canadian gymnast, agreed to do some cartwheels on the beach.
But, unfortunately, she landed awkwardly on the firm sloping sand at the water’s edge, and badly jarred her right foot.
Watkins, who had to spend the rest of the visit with Southall carrying her around, said that she had simply misjudged her landing on the slope.
“It is a little bit of an angle and I hit harder than I was planning, so it was a little bit stupid on my part,” the Age quoted her as saying.
“I got too excited, but I’m okay,” she said.
Southall, who was picked from 34,000 entrants as the winner of Tourism Queensland’s Best Job in the World on Hamilton Island, said that apart from that mishap, it was a stunning start to his new job.
“I’ve got to do this every day for six months. It’s so warm, there’s beautiful sand and I’ve got my girl here with me,” he said.
“Life is pretty sweet,” he added. (ANI)
