London, Sep 23 (IANS) A Briton, found guilty of being a benefits cheat, has been given two centuries to pay back 28,000 pounds income support that he fiddled over six years, the Daily Express reported.

Gordon Williams, 57, was jailed for four months after admitting the offence.

Grimsby Crown Court heard that Williams, of Cleethorpes town in Lincolnshire, has started paying back the money at a rate of 3.30 pounds (five dollars) per week.

Prosecutor Chris Tonge said that Williams, who has arthritis, falsely stated that his wife was not working, when in fact she was employed first as a carer and then in a pub.

Stating that paying at a higher rate would cause him “undue hardship”, Tonge said: “It is going to take 200 years to pay the money off, so clearly it is not going to be repaid.”

Craig Lowe, defending, said Williams spent most of the money on daily expenses. Except for a number of holidays, he had “not lived a life of luxury”.

Judge Jeremy Baker told Williams his offence was “so severe that only a custodial sentence can be considered”.
