BCCI backs Dhoni’s statement on senior playersMarch 21st, 2008 - 11:41 am ICT by admin
New Delhi/Kolkata/Bhopal, Mar 21 (ANI): The Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has backed Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s statement on eliminating senior players being rested during the Australia tour.
BCCI, however, backed Dhoni’s statement saying that the captain has the right to take decisions about his team.
“Team’s captain and coach are present during the selection committee meeting. And selectors consider captain’s opinions during the meeting. So if Dhoni thinks that his decision of eliminating seniors during the Australia tour was beneficial then he should be given credit for it,” said Rajiv Shukla, Vice President of BCCI.
“But technically, the five selectors of the selector committee mutually take all the decisions and captain’s views are given importance in those decisions,” Shukla added.
Dhoni earlier gave a statement to a cricket web site that the tri-series victory in Australia has vindicated his decision to leave out premier batsmen Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid from the one day team.
Ironically, the Indian Chamber of Commerce conferred the ‘Young Achiever Award’ to Ganguly in Kolkata on Thursday in recognition of his contribution to cricket.
Dhoni’s latest statement has once again re-ignited the seniors versus juniors’ debate in the cricket fraternity.
Meanwhile, bowler Irfan Pathan gave thumbs up to Dhoni for his leadership qualities.
“Team India is performing really well since Dhoni became captain. We won twenty-twenty match and in other matches as well he has performed really well,” Pathan told reporters in the sidelines of a function in Bhopal.
Ganguly and Dravid, who were the first to feel the heat of the one-day shake-up late last year, are two of just three Indians to score over 10,000 runs in one-day cricket. (ANI)
