Dhaka, May 4 (IANS) Ila Majumder, a classical singer who co-founded with her husband Barin Majumder then East Pakistan’s first academy for classical music, has died, a media report said.

She died early Tuesday of a stroke at her home in the national capital.

Ila was the mother of Bangladesh’s popular singer Bappa Majumder.

She began her training under Barin in 1954 and the two married in 1960. Together, they founded Monohar Sangeet Academy in 1963, The Daily Star said Wednesday.

While she performed and trained students in classical singing, Ila was also a teacher who lectured on philosophy and logic.

“The classical music scene in Bangladesh is still far from ideal and this couple (Pandit Barin Majumder and Ila Majumder) had dared to dream of a national culture that appreciates and understands classical music. This couple’s contribution to our music and sacrifices for setting up that college have been outstanding,” said Kamal Lohani, chief of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
