Bangladesh court adjourns Yunus hearing till April 4
March 29th, 2011 - 2:23 pm ICT by IANSDhaka, March 29 (IANS) Bangladesh’s Supreme Court Tuesday adjourned till next Monday the hearing on an appeal of Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus and his supporters challenging his removal as the managing director of Grameen Bank.
The seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque passed the adjournment order as the petitioners did not get the certified copy of the high court verdict that upheld his removal earlier this month.
A lawyer for Yunus told the Daily Star that he will file an appeal with the apex court against the high court order by April 4.
Yunus and nine board members of the microfinance bank March 9 filed two separate petitions with the apex court seeking a stay on the verdict and the order of Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank.
They moved the apex court after the high court rejected their two petitions challenging the order removing Yunus March 8.
On March 15, the apex court adjourned the hearing of the appeals for two weeks.
Yunus was relieved from his job as the managing director of Grameen Bank March 2 through a Bangladesh Bank letter sent to Grameen chairman Khondoker Muzammel Huq.
The central bank said Yunus, now 70, had failed to seek its approval when he was re-appointed as the managing director in 2000, violating one of the statutes of the partly state-owned Grameen Bank.
Yunus has denied any wrongdoing and says the bank that he pioneered three decades back has followed the rules.
The case has won Yunus support from many quarters at home and abroad, including the US.
