Sheikh Hasina Dhaka, Nov 28 (IANS) Bangladesh was a key partner for Germany in “tackling global challenges”, German President Christian Wulff said Monday after arriving in Dhaka for a three-day official visit to the country.

Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman received Wulff who arrived along with an 84-member German delegation at the Shahjalal international airport, Xinhua reported.

Wulff, the first German president to visit Bangladesh since 1986, will hold talks Tuesday with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Hasina visited Berlin last month.

The German delegation includes members of the German parliament, state secretaries of the German foreign office and a high-level business group. Two German scholars of Islamic studies are also accompanying the president.

Wulff said his visit would contribute to intensifying the cooperation between the two nations.

“Bangladesh is a key partner for Germany when it comes to tackling global challenges, including the question of how we can together contribute to improved understanding across cultural and religious boundaries. That is why I decided to visit Bangladesh after only a year and a half in office,” he said.

Germany is Bangladesh’s second largest export market worldwide. In 2010, Bangladesh’s export to Germany was 2.3 billion euro while import was 464 million euro.
