Bagpipe busker arrested in England for annoying shoppers
December 22nd, 2008 - 6:50 pm ICT by ANILondon, Dec 22 (ANI): An English busker was arrested just because his bagpipes were a “distressing” to shoppers.
The police seized Shaun Cartwrights bagpipes telling him that his piping disturbed members of the public.
Cartwright was detained for a breach of the peacehe was handcuffed and driven to a police station.
However, he was later released after being told that to press charges against him was not in the public interest.
Cartwright, who has been playing bagpipes for more than 25 years, was arrested when he was busking in Bridport, Dorset.
“I”d been playing for almost an hour outside Superdrug on the main street and had made about 50 pounds, so it clearly wasn”t causing that much offence, the Telegraph quoted him as saying.
He added: “But a shopkeeper called the police and two officers turned up saying they had a complaint and they had to respond to it. They asked me to move on but I wanted to finish my hour of playing and put the blow stick to my mouth and that was it.
The Bristol resident was released after an hour and when he answered his bail five days later, he was told that the case was not being taken any further.
He continued: “It was a waste of everybody’’s time. People are prejudice against the bagpipes. People may not like the sound of them but that doesn”t give them the right to get the police to come along and hassle you.”
Even Dorset Police admitted that they had arrested Shaun and released him without charge.
Inspector Alan Jenkins said: “He was given strong words of advice because of the distress he had caused shopkeepers and passersby.” (ANI)
