Baby’s emergency call lands father in jail
January 22nd, 2009 - 1:16 pm ICT by IANSToronto, Jan 22 (IANS) In a bizarre family drama, an 11-month-old Canadian baby landed his father in jail after accidentally dialling 911 - the emergency phone number in North America. The boy pressed the number while playing with the cordless phone in the family home in the city of White Rock near Vancouver last week.
Responding to the call, police landed at the family’s home only to discover a secret drug operation, said a Canadian Press report Wednesday.
Police said when they took the emergency call, the caller hung up. But they traced the call to the home where it originated.
When they knocked on the door, nobody answered.
Police said when they entered the home using force, they found the father of the baby perplexed to see cops in his home. He said he never made the call.
They said the puzzle was solved when they found the baby playing with the cordless phone.
“We saw him playing with the cordless phone and just pressing all the buttons, so evidently he had called 911,” police said.
Before leaving, the cops started inspecting the residence only to discover a 500-plant marijuana growing operation.
Police arrested the father and removed the baby boy from his care.
He will appear in court to face charges of growing an illegal substance.
Because of lenient Canadian drug laws, marijuana is grown secretly in many homes by drug dealers. It is secretly smuggled into the US in exchange for cocaine.
This multibillon dollar contraband business has lured many Indo-Canadian youths from the Vancouver area into drug gangs.
More than 100 of them have lost their lives in drug-related gang violence over the years.
