Cincinnati, April 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A baby giraffe has been born at the Cincinnati Zoo. The giraffe was born to parents Tessa and Kimba on Saturday.

The zoo announced that this is the first time that a giraffe has been born in the zoo for 26 years. The sex of the baby giraffe has not yet been checked by the officials of the zoo. The baby is reportedly close to the mother and that made it difficult for the officials to check the sex of the calf.

The calf was born in the early hours of Saturday and the zoo says the animal started taking its first steps when it was just 20 minutes old. Within an hour, the calf was already nursing. The birth brings the number of giraffes in the zoo to three.

Thane Maynard, the executive director of the Cincinnati zoo said that, “When there’s a birth of an animal, it’s awe-inspiring because nature is a phenomenal system. That’s true when a mouse is born, but when you’ve got a 6-foot baby that comes out and flops on the ground, it’s just the darndest thing. It goes without saying, this is an exciting day.”
