BA worker plotted ‘to blow up jet’ in ‘John Le Carre moment’ at Heathrow
February 17th, 2011 - 2:06 pm ICT by ANILondon, Feb.17 (ANI): Rajib Karim, 30, charged with terror offences held a secret meeting with an extremist at Heathrow airport in a ‘John Le Carre moment’ to plot blowing up a jet, a court in London has heard.
Karim, who worked with British Airways and an associate carried out the secret operation via encrypted and coded e-mails,The Daily Mail reports.
Karim, given the code name ‘carl’ went to terminal 5 looking for a person named ‘Terry’, real name Yacoub Ali, as per instructions given in the e-mail.
The coded message instructed Karim to look for his younger ‘brother’ who is coming to Britain, which is referred to as ‘Brazil’. The message was from Bangladesh and sent by ‘Brett’, a conduit between Karim and his younger brother, the paper said.
The Heathrow meeting was described as a ‘John Le Carre moment’by Karim’s barrister James Wood QC, it added.
The jurors were told, Karim received instructions the previous November, while the meeting were held in late January or early February 2009.
Karim admitted that he riased funds and created promotion videos for a terror group Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh, but denied that he and his brother were members of the group, the paper said.
He added: ‘In Islam what we believe is if you put in the effort, whatever happens, if you don’t get the results in this life you will get rewarded and that is what I feel.’
According to the paper, it was alleged that Karim was leading a double life, one as a quiet family man during work at the Newcastle call centre, and the other remaining ‘entirely committed to an extreme jihadist activities.Karim has been pleaded gulity for encouraging others to volunteer for terrorist operations abroad.
He was arrested in February last year and is still under trial.(ANI)
