Sydney, Sep 11 (IANS) Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard Sunday joined the US ambassador to the country at a ceremony held in the capital Canberra on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attack.
The ceremony held on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin featured a flag party by the Australian Federal Police and the US Marine Corps, Xinhua reported.
Hundreds of Australians attended the event. They lit candles to remember the victims of the attack, and observed a minute of silence.
US Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich thanked Australia for its friendship and support to America over the past decade.
Earlier, Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd also marked the anniversary at a ceremony at the War Memorial in Canberra.
Rudd was joined by French Foreign Minister Alan Juppe. Together they laid wreaths remembering the victims of the attacks. The two officials also remembered Australian and French soldiers who died in Afghanistan.
