Aussies owed millions from Delhi Commonwealth Games
January 20th, 2011 - 1:52 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, Jan.20 (ANI): More than three months after the conclusion of the XIXth Commonwealth Games, Australian sporting bodies and major event groups continue to complain that they are owed millions by the Indian Government.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the scandal could even hit the taxpayer, with the government-funded Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) saying it is still owed “a six-figure sum” due two months ago.
Separately, Sydney Olympics maestro Ric Birch has commissioned Slater and Gordon to launch a likely multi-million dollar class action against Delhi Commonwealth Games organizers for substantial unpaid bills.
Birch said he was “seriously pissed off” with Games organisers.
ACGA CEO Perry Crosswhite said his body was one of “30 or 40″ similar Games bodies around the world owed money by Delhi organisers.
Birch’s Indian lawsuit is shaping as the first salvo in a possible three million dollar-plus class action involving at least four of Australia’s biggest major event names - including his Spectak Productions, and world-renowned fireworks group Howard and Sons - against Delhi organisers.
Most companies hit were key players in the opening and closing ceremonies. (ANI)
