London, Dec 9 (IANS) A large group of Asian inmates of a young offenders institution in England clashed with security officials Monday after running riot during Eid celebrations. They were part of a 80-strong group which was armed with hammers, saws and knives and tried to damage two workshops inside the institution in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

What sparked off the unrest is not yet known, but it took the officials nearly six hours to quell the inmates. The riot leaders are being identified and segregated, to be sent to different centres.

The unrest began around 11.15 a.m. at the Buckinghamshire centre, which holds up to 435 young men, including some of the worst, most violent young offenders. Around one in 10 are understood to be lifers.

The incident, described by the Prison Service as “concerted indiscipline”, was believed to have broken out during protests as Asian inmates celebrated the festival of Eid.

Tom Robson, executive officer of the Prison Officers’ Association, told The Telegraph that at one point staff had to literally “fight” with the inmates to restore order. He said it was a “serious incident” and officers from other prisons had been called in to help.
