ASEAN offers help to quake-hit Japan

Jakarta, March 12 (IANS) The ASEAN countries have expressed their readiness to help Japan recover from the devastating earthquake and deadly tsunami that struck its north-eastern parts Friday.

“ASEAN member states stand ready to render their support in the efforts to help bring about a swift recover in whatever way it can, recognizing that some member states have already pledged assistance,” Xinhua quoted the Jakarta-based Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as stating through a release Saturday.

ASEAN member states are confident that the government and people of Japan will fully recover and rise from these unfortunate disasters with strong spirit and resilience, the statement said.

“ASEAN member states extend their heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the government and people of Japan, and particularly those affected by this disaster. They hope that the bereaved families of the victims would be given strength and comfort in facing this calamity,” the statement further said.

“Related to development of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the president of Indonesia, the government of Indonesia and all people of Indonesia once again extend deepest condolences on the disasters,” Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said in a separate statement.
