Around 300 Zimbabweans seek refuge at South African embassyJune 26th, 2008 - 12:43 pm ICT by IANS
Harare/Johannesburg, June 26 (DPA) Around 300 people have sought refuge at the South African embassy in Harare, South Africa’s Sapa news agency reported, saying the group was believed to be made up of supporters of Zimbabwe’s opposition party. “Our ambassador Mlungisi Makalima and his team of diplomats are currently in talks with the group. The situation is under control,” spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa was quoted as saying Wednesday by South Africa’s Sapa news agency.
The report comes as leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region meet to discuss the crisis in Zimbabwe ahead of presidential run-off elections Friday.
Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader and candidate Morgan Tsvangirai earlier this week pulled out of the run-off.
