Aromatherapy, yoga, head massages for foreign criminals awaiting deportation in UK
October 22nd, 2009 - 5:27 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )London, Oct 22(ANI): Foreign criminals awaiting deportation in UK, including rapists and murderers, recently had an implausible experience when they were treated to aromatherapy, yoga and head massages, all paid for by the taxpayer.
It was part of the “Well Being Day” held at the Government-funded Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre in Berkshire, which regularly holds theme days for more than 300 detainees.
Reacting to the issue, a spokesman for the UK Border Agency said that the detainees are subjected to such treatment in order to keep them healthy.
“To maintain order and prevent health issues, we provide activities which encourage detainees to remain co-operative. We’re determined to ensure people are treated compassionately,” The Sun quoted the spokesman, as saying.
However, the Taxpayers’ Alliance has been fuming over the reports, saying that their money should not be wasted on such unnecessary activities.
“These offenders should be given the bare minimum until they can be deported. We should be seeing the back of these people - not funding massages for them,” it said.
It is not the first time that the UK Government was being criticized, earlier in June a controversy was sparked for spending thousands of pounds on Nintendo Wiis and plasma TVs for the inmates. (ANI)
