Argentine scientists discover how to eliminate memoriesMay 1st, 2008 - 7:13 pm ICT by admin
Buenos Aires, May 1 (IANS) Argentine scientists have succeeded in manipulating the memory protein to eliminate memories, a potentially useful finding that can be used in treating phobias or post-traumatic stress, EFE news agency reported Thursday. Experts in pharmacology and biochemistry at Universidad de Buenos Aires demonstrated during tests on rats that if substances that nullify the memory protein are injected, they can alter the rats’ ability to remember things, the daily La Nacion reported.
“This opens up a situation whereby already formed memories could be interfered with,” Arturo Romano, one of the scientists conducting the research, told the daily.
“Potentially, it could be applicable in cases of phobias or people suffering from post-traumatic stress,” he said.
But Romano said that there was still much to be learned regarding whether the experience could be reproduced in humans.
