Apex court denies Rubina Memon bailSeptember 19th, 2008 - 11:07 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Sep 19 (IANS) The Supreme Court Friday dismissed the bail plea of Rubina Suleiman Memon, sister-in-law of 1993 Mumbai blasts mastermind Tiger Memon and who has been sentenced to a life term for her role in the serial bombings that killed 257 people.A bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan dismissed Rubina’s plea after Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam opposed it, contending that once a blast convict was granted bail on humanitarian grounds, it would set a precedent and the court would be flooded with similar pleas from other convicts in the case.
Presently lodged in a Mumbai jail, Rubina had approached the court pleading that she has a 12-year-old daughter who does not have anybody at home to look after her.
Subramaniam again opposed the bail plea, saying he had instructions from the government to do so.
This is the second time the apex court has denied bail to Rubina, wife of Tiger Memon’s brother Suleiman. She was earlier denied bail Feb 12 along with three others sentenced to life for their role in the terror attack.
Rubeena had been convicted for allowing her house to be used for conspiratorial meetings and storage of arms and explosives. She had also given her van for the bombings that shook the metropolis March 12, 1993.
