London, May 16 (IANS) The family of Indian-origin woman Anni Dewani, who was murdered during her honeymoon in South Africa, have immersed her ashes in a lake in Sweden.
Around 20 close family members and friends attended the service. There was also a request on Facebook to light candles in the memory of the 28-year-old woman, the Daily Express reported.
Anni was shot dead in Cape Town, South Africa, in November last year. Her husband, 31-year-old Shrien Dewani, is now in a psychiatric centre near his hometown Bristol, awaiting possible extradition to South Africa where he faces murder charges.
Anni’s family conducted the ashes immersion ceremony near her family home in Mariestad Saturday. Anni’s uncle Ashok Hindocha said: “We took a boat out on Lake Vanern, next to Mariestad where she was born and where she spent her childhood. She loved swimming, cycling, walking and playing there on sunny days.”
“It was a very intimate moment, especially for her mother, Nilam. It is a relief to know that her body is finally where she belongs. But her soul isn’t exactly at peace yet. This can only happen when all the questions surrounding her death are answered. We know who did it. They are in jail. But the ‘why’ must still be exposed. We are in a very harsh situation.”
Hindocha pleaded with Shrien Dewani to return to South Africa.
“Anni is dead and her husband is a suspect. Today the family once again begs him to come to South Africa and help clear things up,” he said.
South African prosecutors want Dewani extradited from Britain after arrested hitmen claimed he paid them to have his wife killed.
Zola Tongo, 31, has been sentenced to 18 years for murder. Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, and Xolile Mngeni, 23, face murder, abduction and robbery charges.
Dewani denies all allegations.
