America’s $33 Billion In Unclaimed Money: Is Any of it Yours?
May 14th, 2010 - 8:16 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonMay 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to recent news reports from CBS News, there are huge sums of unclaimed money, 33 billion dollars worth, just sitting around in United States accounts, in government agencies and banks. With simple online searches, you can enter your name and find out of any of the cash is due to you.
As reported by CBS News, Business, and Economics Correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, these missing monies are not tax related. Instead, they are from such sources as forgotten savings accounts, stock investments, annuities, inheritances, or cash lost by the postal system. Protection programs set up by the federal government states that each state must keep a record of all of this unclaimed cash. With a total 33 billion dollars, chances are pretty decent that you may have money waiting for you. So how can you find out?
According to Jarvis, “it’s totally free to search and it takes no time at all.” There are a few online websites where you can simply enter your name, to search for your own money, or a family name to search for a possible inheritance. Two of these are www.unclaimed.org or www.missingmoney.com. They both have a free service to search state databases by simply typing a name. If you do find your name in the search, you can file a claim pretty simply as well. According to Jarvis, “You’ll need to file a claim with the state government, including your personal information and Social Security number. This can usually be done online. And you’ll need to provide identification. It should take a few weeks to receive the money,” she says.
