New York, Apr 12(ANI): An Al-Qaida terror suspect arrested in Pakistan has revealed details about the foiled plot to blow up New York’s busiest subways last year.
According to reports, the unidentified man, who helped plan the plot, is expected to be extradited to the United States to be tried in the Brooklyn Federal Court with lead bomber Najibullah Zazi, and his friends Adis Medunjanin and Zarein Ahmedzay. The arrest would help the law enforcement officials to piece together a fuller picture of the plan to kill innocent people around the 9/11 anniversary last year.
The arrested suspect revealed that Zazi and his friends allegedly planned to strap explosives to their bodies and split up, heading for the Grand Central and Times Square stations - the two busiest subway stations in New York City, sources said.
They would board trains on the 1, 2, 3 and 6 lines at rush hour and planned to position themselves in the middle of the packed trains to ensure the maximum carnage when they blew themselves up, The Daily News reports.
Zazi was arrested in September 2009, and on February 22 he pled guilty to conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiring to commit murder in a foreign country, and providing material support to a terrorist organization.
He said he was recruited by Al-Qaeda in Pakistan for a suicide “martyrdom” attack against the U.S., and that his bombing target was the New York City subway system.
Zazi faces a possible life sentence without possibility of parole for the first two counts, and an additional sentence of 15 years for the third count.
Sentencing will take place on June 25. (ANI)
