Baghdad, July 8 (DPA) Three militants from the Al Qaeda in Iraq group were killed Tuesday in fighting with the police in Iraq’s volatile Diyala province, the stronghold of the Sunni extremist group, security officials said Tuesday. The militants were killed in clashes with police in the village of Makhisa, security sources told the Voices of Iraq news agency.
Iraqi troops captured during security sweeps in the province capital Baquba two senior members of the Islamic State of Iraq group, security officials told VOI.
The extremist Islamic State of Iraq, made up of seven armed groups, including Al Qaeda in Iraq, was established in 2006 in Sunni provinces.
It has been enforcing a strict version of the Islamic Sharia law in areas it controlled in central and western Iraq.
The groups has appointed ministers, of whom minister of finance Haki Ismail and minister of agriculture Muthana al-Dulaymi were arrested Tuesday, according to VOI.
