Tehran, May 27 (IANS) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Tuesday said the resolution of the Lebanese crisis proves that the countries in the region are capable of ensuring stability in the region, and accused the US and Israel of meddling in the Middle East politics, IRNA reported. His remarks came during a meeting here with the visiting Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani.

Lebanon’s parliament Sunday elected army chief General Michel Suleiman as the country’s 12th president, filling a post left vacant for six months by a political crisis that had pushed the country to the brink of a new civil war.

A Qatari-brokered deal last week between rival Lebanese leaders defused 18 months of political stalemate that erupted into fighting this month.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters briefly seized parts of Beirut, routing government loyalists.

The vote had been postponed 19 times because of the crisis.

“The Lebanese developments and the Doha agreement created new conditions and good opportunities for the regional nations,” Ahmadinejad noted.

Stressing that Qatar can play a more constructive role in the region, he said, “The Doha meeting was a good experience for settlement of regional issues through regional countries.”

Ahmadinejad underscored the need for support of all Islamic states for the oppressed nation of Palestine.

On Tehran-Doha friendly relations, he expressed his satisfaction with the “growing trend of bilateral cooperation”.

The Qatari premier appreciated Iran’s constructive role in helping create consensus among Lebanese political parties and the success of the Doha meeting.

Expressing his concern over the critical situation in the occupied Palestinian lands, al-Thani called for dispatch of food supplies and medicine to the Palestinian people.
