African Union determined to achieve ceasefire in Libya
April 13th, 2011 - 6:50 am ICT by IANSAlgiers, April 13 (IANS) The African Union (AU) is determined to reach a ceasefire in Libya to “preserve the interests of the Libyan people”, Xinhua quoted Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz as saying Tuesday.
Abdel Aziz, who is a member of the African Union (AU) panel on Libya, said: “We are determined to achieve this goal (ceasefire) to preserve the highest interest of the Libyan people.”
He was speaking following discussions between Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and AU panel on Libya.
Besides Abdel Aziz, the other members of AU panel on Libya include, Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso and President of the African Union (AU) Commission Jean Ping.
The delegation arrived in Algiers Monday night after a two-day visit to mediate the situation in Libya, where violent clashes are continuing between pro-Muammar Gaddafi forces and rebels.
