Afghans fear bin-Laden’s death will divert US’ attention from Kabul

Kabul, May 3 (ANI): Senior Afghan government officials now fear that the United States would forget about their region after tracking down Osama bin-Laden.

According to the Washington Post, much fear the situation could become worse with the US thinking seriously about withdrawing its troops.

“Americans will forget Afghanistan again,” a senior Afghan official said, echoing the frequent lament that the U.S. gave up on the region after the Soviet withdrawal in 1989.

Many Afghans believe the fact that bin-Laden was found in Pakistan, is a strong reason to convince Washington that a successful outcome in Afghanistan depends on U.S. pressure on insugents based in that country.

President Hamid Karzai, who praised American troops for killing bin Laden, said the focus of terrorism remains beyond Afghan borders, adding: “For years we have said that the fight against terrorism is not in Afghan villages and houses. Stop bombarding Afghan villages and searching Afghan people.” (ANI)
