Afghan mayor killed in suicide blast

Kabul, July 27 (IANS) The mayor of Afghanistan’s Kandahar city was killed Wednesday in a suicide attack when he was attending a meeting, Xinhua reported.
The blast ripped through the city’s municipal department, killing Ghulam Haider Hamidi, provincial official Zalmai Ayubi told Xinhua.
The government blamed the Taliban for the assassination. Kandahar, once a Taliban stronghold, lies about 450 km south of Kabul.
