Afghan girls learn Spanish from troops
April 5th, 2010 - 11:33 am ICT by IANSMadrid, April 5 (IANS/EFE) Students of a girls’ school in Afghanistan have been learning Spanish from a contingent of Spanish troops deployed in the war-torn country under the NATO-led reconstruction force.
Spain’s Provincial Reconstruction Team in the northwestern Afghan city of Qala i Naw began teaching Spanish at one of the three girls’ school in that area, the defence ministry said.
Starting Tuesday, a group of soldiers from the military contingent will be teaching Spanish twice a week to a group of 30 students.
Earlier, Spanish classes were held in boys’ school, but now, thanks to the trust created by the work of the Spanish troops, it has been possible to teach girls too, the ministry said.
Spain has 1,600 soldiers stationed across Afghanistan under the flag of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
