Advisor to Afghan president shot dead (Lead)

Taliban Kabul, July 18 (IANS) Taliban militants Sunday shot dead an advisor to Afghan President Hamid Karzai along with a visiting lawmaker at his house here, Xinhua reported.

Jan Mohammad Khan, the former governor of Uruzgan province, was killed along with parliamentarian Hashim Watanwal at his house around 8.00 p.m., an official said.

A firefight erupted after the militants raided his house in the kartai Char area of the city in which one of the assailants was killed, he added requesting anonymity.

The security was beefed up in the area after the attack. The fighting was still raging late sunday evening.

Khan, a member of the Popolzai Pashtun tribe and a close ally of Karzai, was the governor of the southern Uruzgan province from January 2002 to March 2006.
