Beijing, Nov 26 (IANS) As many as 113 people, including 77 government employees, have been penalised in a Chinese province over a chemical tainted pork scandal, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The scandal had come to light in the month of March in central China’s Henan province, a leading agricultural base.

The punishments varied from jail terms to reprieved death penalty, the provincial higher people’s court said in a press release late Friday night.

The main culprit, Liu Xiang, was sentenced to death with two years’ reprieve on conviction for harming public safety, it said.

Liu’s workshop producing clenbuterol, a carcinogenic chemical that is added to pig feed to produce leaner pork, was busted in Henan’s Xiangyang city March 25, the court said.

Liu’s collaborator, Xi Zhongjie, was sentenced to life.

By March 2011, they had sold over 2,700 kg of the chemical that spread to eight provinces including Henan, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces, making 6.4 million yuan in revenue.
