Abducted Italian journalists freed in Libya (Lead)
August 25th, 2011 - 6:12 pm ICT by IANSTripoli, Aug 25 (IANS/AKI) Four Italian journalists who were kidnapped in Libya were freed Thursday during a raid on the Tripoli apartment where they were being held by soldiers loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.
All four were in good health, the Corriere della Sera website said.
The four journalists - Elisabetta Rosapina and Giuseppe Sarcina from Corriere della Sera, Claudio Morci from Avvenire and Domenico Quirico from La Stampa - were abducted Wednesday by gunmen, some 80 km from Tripoli.
An Italian diplomatic representative in Benghazi had said they were kidnapped by Gaddafi’s soldiers.
“I’m free and healthy. I had thought I would be killed for sure,” Quirico told Sky 24 satellite news channel.
In a phone call to his newsroom, Morci said the four were stopped at a road-block while travelling from Zawiya in the direction of Tripoli. The driver of the car was killed and they were beaten by their kidnappers.
