A teacher who lost her voice awarded 150,000 pounds
November 10th, 2010 - 5:36 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Nov 10 (IANS) A teacher, who lost her voice after regularly shouting in the class in a school in Britain, was paid over 150,000 pounds.
The amount was given to 50-year-old Joyce Walters who had to give up her job after years of making herself heard across noisy classrooms left her with painful nodules on her vocal cords, The Sun reported.
Walters said she had to raise her voice as the classes were too large and she now finds it difficult to hold lengthy conversations.
“Teaching was my calling. I adored the classroom and miss it so much. But the problems with my voice make it impossible for me to ever go back.”
She first won 11,000 pounds in out of court settlement from Hillingdon council in North London. Later, 145,000 pounds was agreed for a personal injury claim, pushing her total to £156,000.
Walters started teaching English at Harlington Adult Education Centre in 2005. The following year, she was diagnosed with nodules.
A spokeswoman for the TaxPayers’ Alliances said: “This whopping payout sadly reflects a growing compensation culture. Schools and education authorities shouldn’t simply roll over and pay out when threatened with legal action.”
