A British school where students speak 64 languages

London, Apr 1 (ANI): Students speak 64 languages at one of Britain’s most multi-cultural schools with majority of them not speaking English, the native language of the country.

Four in five children at Woodside High in north London do not speak English as their first language

The Daily Star reports that many arrive at the school gates in Tottenham for the first time with virtually no understanding of our native tongue.

The revelation comes a week after MPs warned that one in seven children in the UK do not speak English at home.

And they show the full strain on schools with dozens of different nationalities.

“The thing about the one-in-seven figure is that you’re going to get tremendous variation across the country. In some schools it could be just one or two pupils. In urban schools like ours, it can be 80 per cent,” said Woodside head teacher Joan McVittie.

To cope with the language problem, Woodside seeks staff who speak as many languages as possible.

But the huge mix of backgrounds often leads to fights between various factions. (ANI)
