953 detained for Lhasa riotsApril 9th, 2008 - 5:10 pm ICT by admin
Beijing, April 9 (Xinhua) At least 953 people have been detained in connection with the March 14 violence in the Tibetan capital Lhasa. Of these, 403 were formally arrested, Qiangba Puncog, chairman of the Tibet regional government, told reporters here.
A total of 362 people surrendered to the police while 328 people were set free because they committed only minor offences or expressed their readiness to cooperate with the authorities, the official said.
Of the 93 most wanted suspects, the police have arrested 13.
The authorities have offered compensation to families of 18 civilians who lost their lives in the violence, Puncog said. The situation in Lhasa has normalised, he said.
Violence erupted in Lhasa last month against Chinese rule, leading to deaths and arson. Chinese authorities blamed the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama for the unrest.
